Motion Capture Lab
University of Auckland City Campus
The Motion Capture Laboratory is a part of the Department of Mechanical and Mechatronics Engineering.
This facility is our primary flight test area, equipped with a 10-metre by 10-metre safety-netted flight zone. This large area allows for a wide range of flight activities, testing aircraft control, stability and object interaction. A Vicon Tracker motion capture system provides real-time position data to aircraft under test, allowing for high levels of flight automation.
Boundary Layer Wind Tunnel
University of Auckland Newmarket Campus
The Boundary Layer Wind Tunnel (BLWT) is operated by the Department of Mechanical and Mechatronics Engineering.
The BLWT is a large, general-purpose wind tunnel, with a test section 20 metres long, 3.7 metres wide and 2.5 metres tall, capable of 72 kph. This size enables us to test fly drones in simulated real-world wind conditions, testing the response of both the controller and the aircraft hardware. The flight test area is equipped with a Motive Optitrack motion capture system, providing similar capability to the Motion Capture Lab.
